3 Point Light Set-up

Light 1 is called the key light. This is the main source of light for the subject. The main purpose is not only to light the subject but also to provide depth by creating shadows. This is why the position of the key light is off camera left.

Light 2 is called the fill light. It is on the right hand side of the camera; For a standard portrait, you want to have the fill light at about half power compared to the key light. If you want the shadows more prominent then use less fill light.

Light 3 is called the hair light. It’s purpose is to separate the subject from the background by lighting the hair. This effect greatly improves upon the three dimensional look a professional quality portrait should produce.

Pin Hole Camera

We recreated a camera obscura with Pringles tubes. I cut the Pringles tube into two and put tissue paper around the shorter half and sealed it in with the Pringles cap. I then stuck the halves together with masking tape. After that i made a small hole at the bottom of the shorter half. Finally I poked my Pringles tube through the blinds with the pinhole facing the window. We saw the whole of outside upside down; however it didn't work that well as it wasn't a enough light to get a good recreation of the camera obscura.

Muybridge workshop

Today we done a Muybridge workshop which involved us setting up 4 cameras, each camera was set off at different time to create a motion picture. this was quite interesting as we had to time and plan when we took the pictures and how far apart the cameras had to be, i was on camera three

1. Can you find Image evidence of the technique?

http://www.bigshotcamera.org/images/fun/projects/optics/lenscamera/Daguerreotype.jpg

2. When was it first discovered and by whom?

1839 By Louis Daguerre

3. What is special about the technique?

4. How does this technique work? Can you find or describe the processes needed to make it work? Maybe illustrate how it is made.

Preparation of the plate prior to image exposure resulted in the formation of a layer of photo-sensitive silver halide, and exposure to a scene or image through a lens formed a latent image. The latent image was made visible, or "developed", by placing the exposed plate over a heated (about 30°C) cup of mercury. Daguerre was first to discover and publish (in the publication of the process and the English patent of 1839) the principle of latent image development

5. Can you comment how important this technique has been for the history of photography? For example was it popular and is it still used today?

Visual experience that is unique

Can you find Image evidence of the technique?

2. When was it first discovered and by whom?

1700’s

3. What is special about the technique?

It was the first ever camera, but there was no way of saving/storing the image

4. How does this technique work? Can you find or describe the processes needed to make it work? Maybe illustrate how it is made.

The device consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside where it is reproduced, upside-down, but with colour and perspective preserved. The image can be projected onto paper, and can then be traced to produce a highly accurate representation
